A Gender Glossary

Gender Analysis

Examining programs, policies, or priorities for different roles, responsibilities, levels of power, or social expectations experienced by female and male participants (used interchangeably with "gender lens.")

Gender Aware

The same as Gender Lens (see below)

Gender Equity

Ensuring structural equality for women and girls and boys and men: rights, opportunities, privileges and social power dynamics

Gender Expression

Expressing being masculine or feminine through clothing & behavior

Gender Identity

Inner sense of being male or female

Gender Lens

Examining programs, policies, and funding priorities for different roles, responsibilities, levels of power, or social expectations experienced by female and male participants (used interchangeably with "gender analysis.")

Gender Mainstreaming

Integrating a gender analysis into programs and policies so that women and girls achieve gender equality in terms of access, privileges, representation and power.

Gender Norms

Socially-constructed ideals, scripts, expectations for womanhood and manhood

Gender Roles

Social and behavioral norms for how men and women are expected to act: being a doctor or nurse, being martial or maternal.

Gender as Sex

Courts and media increasingly using "gender” when they mean biological sex

Gender Transformative

Policies, programs and funding priorities that promote social justice by highlighting, challenging, and ultimately changing harmful masculine and feminine norms

Transgender

Umbrella term for those whose self-identity does not conform to conventional binary woman/ man, including those whose gender identity varies from their birth-assigned sex (e.g., transsexual).
